Alberta Health Services and CCSVI
Alberta Health Services statement on venous imaging and angioplasty in Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
February 16, 2010
Two recent studies by an Italian vascular surgeon, Dr. Paolo Zamboni, describing a potential new approach to treating Multiple Sclerosis (MS), have generated significant interest. The studies by Dr. Zamboni suggest that there may be an association between chronic cerebrospinal venous abnormalities and MS. However, this possible association requires confirmation by independent investigators conducting larger, “controlled” research trials. In fact, preliminary results from the University of Buffalo suggest the association is much weaker than that reported by Dr. Zamboni. Funding for further studies is currently being expedited by MS Societies in several countries including Canada. Read More...

CCSVI and MS in Alberta
A message from the MS Society of Canada, Alberta Division
You have no doubt heard the exciting research news about CCSVI and MS that was featured on CTV’s W-5 and in the Globe and Mail last November. The MS Society in Alberta has been proactive in its response by meeting with the Alberta Government. Since November we have had meetings with Ministers Ron Liepert, Lloyd Snelgrove and Doug Horner. Each Minister has expressed interest in reaching out to Alberta health institutions and MS researchers to discuss the promise this research may hold and the role Alberta should play.
The MS Society has recommended that Government does indeed have a role in providing leadership to facilitate CCSVI research. In particular, we have secured a commitment from Doug Horner, new Deputy Premier and Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, to determine how the Alberta Government can support this new research.
You may also be aware that the MS Society of Canada responded to the early results of this research by initiating its first-ever request for research operating grant applications on this topic. It will be very interesting to follow the developments of MS research worldwide in this area.
We will continue to advocate for funding for research breakthroughs like that which CCSVI may represent and for major steps forward in the support of people living with MS today.
